   Fire Fighter EMT/Airfield Services Specialist

Job Description:
Performs general fire fighting, rescue, and emergency medical functions in and around airport facilities and is also responsible for maintenance, repair and operation of airfield, including associated equipment, fixtures, and property.

Job Duties:
Employee responsibilities include fire fighting, rescue, and basic medical treatment. Employee will also be responsible for operation of any activities related to the airfield, including: adherence to FAR Part 139 compliance criteria regarding airfield areas, airfield inspection programs, snow and ice control and removal, airfield mowing and grounds maintenance, wildlife hazard mitigation pavement surfaces management, correction of unsafe airfield conditions, and all associated record-keeping, and appropriate information dissemination.

Additionally employee will be responsible for the operation, upkeep, repair and maintenance of airport owned apparatus and equipment including rescue vehicles, tractors, mowers, plows, end loader, snow blowers, and other airfield equipment.                       

Minimum Requirements:
Applicant MUST BE 21 years of age or older.  He or she must have a high school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent, and current Kentucky EMT certification a plus,  Applicant must also they must have a familiarity with fire fighting and rescue related equipment and apparatus, but some fire fighting experience is preferred.

Applicant must have a valid driver’s license, and a clean driving record for the last five years, (excluding minor traffic violations) to be able to complete required airfield drivers’ training. Applicant must be familiar with the accurate and responsible operation, care and maintenance of firearms for annual certification as a wildlife mitigation officer.  Applicant should be able to pass an extensive background check and be able to acquire and maintain an airfield security clearance issued by the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA).

Applicant should also have a level of computer proficiency, and ability to work office related equipment and software programs.  Applicant will be expected to work at minimum 40 hours per week, most days between the hours of 4am and midnight, with the ability work longer hours if needed. Applicant should also be able to be “on call” in case of an emergency.

Experience with repair and maintenance of diesel engines is a plus, as is electrical or other mechanical experience.

 

Physical Requirements:
The position requires applicant to possess a high degree of mobility with no major mobility restrictions. Physical exertion requirements may approach extreme limits. Applicant must perform required ARFF functions while dressed in protective fire clothing and wearing breathing apparatus. Applicant must be able to lift 90 pounds to a height of five feet, comfortable with the use of ladders to a height of twenty feet, and operate equipment described, but not limited to, in the Job Duties section . Applicant should be able to distinguish colors used in equipment warning lights, D.O.T. HAZMAT shipping labels, and product container warning label color codes, as well as Control Tower light gun colors.

PURPOSE OF POSITION
Performs security functions relating to passenger security screening and airport law enforcement. Training and certification for this position are subject to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Commonwealth of Kentucky requirements. This position requires ability to speak clearly, authoritatively, tactfully, and courteously to individuals in a manner that supports the airport mission, values, and vision. Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Patrols airport property in uniform to deter criminal activity, trespassing and other acts that would affect commercial aviation and ensure the integrity of fencing and gates.
• May be the first responder to an airplane crash or other emergency incident.
• Writes variety of reports and keeps excellent records.
• Responds to emergencies and takes immediate action to control crowds, reduce the impact of security breaches and other aviation related events.
• Responds to security breaches, violation of security regulations and trespasses.
• Responds to law enforcement call for service.
• Supports the passenger and baggage screening process by assisting the TSA.
• May conduct preliminary assessment of unattended baggage or suspicious articles.
• Receives and releases lost and found articles.
• Provides general and aviation related information to the public, airport Tenants and employees. Provides escorts on the airfield operations area for dignitaries, construction crews, representatives of the press and other Law Enforcement Agencies.
• Work with minimal direct supervision.
• Authorized to carry a firearm and make arrest(s).
• Operates a two-way radio to communicate with the air traffic and other Law Enforcement radio monitoring entities.
• Follow written and oral instructions.
• Enforces and supports the Airport Security Program (ASP).
• Assists in Airport Snow Removal Operations as needed
• Other duties may be assigned as needed.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
A high school diploma or GED are required for the position. Prior Law Enforcement certification within the past twelve month in Kentucky or another state, which Kentucky will accept. Successfully complete all required FAA, TSA, and State required and initial training. Use of firearm and defensive tactics and safety principles and practices. A preference will be given to candidates with prior Law Enforcement experience. Knowledge or familiarization in airfield environments, and aircraft and/or radio communication is also preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES
Prior Law Enforcement certification within the past twelve month in Kentucky or another state, which Kentucky will accept. You must be able to obtain a valid driver’s license in the state of Kentucky and maintain it throughout employment. Upon offer of hire, the candidate must submit to fingerprinting and pass a federal background check of the past 10 years to obtain an airport security badge.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is continuously required to communicate by talking and listening, use of fingers and hands, repetitive motion, sitting and driving different vehicles. Frequently required to stand, walk, reach, and feel. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Confront dangerous situations; and exert the physical stamina, strength, flexibility, and coordination to pursue and restrain a fleeing suspect and defend oneself and other from physical attack.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This role will work in an office setting but will be around an airport environment and with varied personnel work sites including Terminal facilities, maintenance shops, airfield movement and non-movement areas and secure areas around the airport. This work requires shift work and will vary depending on the needs of the organization. Occasional participation in evening and weekend events are mandatory.
