‘Soaring Through 80 Years’: Barkley Regional Airport marks 80 years of service

April 01, 2026

Barkley Regional Airport (PAH) celebrates 80 years of commercial air service on April 1, 2026, connecting the Jackson Purchase region to the world and marking a milestone that reflects decades of growth, innovation, and community impact.

Since the first commercial flight on April 1, 1946, Barkley has evolved from a small regional airfield into a modern, 1,000+ acre airport, providing daily commercial air service and supporting economic development throughout the four-state region.

Barkley Regional Airport, formally Paducah Army Airfield, began as a military airfield to train U.S. Army Air Corps B-17 bomber crews in 1941. The airport was later renamed Barkley Field in honor of Vice President Alben W. Barkley, who was from western Kentucky.

In 2026, the airport continues to provide access to the national travel network through major hubs, including Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), linking local travelers to destinations worldwide.

“Marking 80 years of commercial flight service is a significant achievement for any airport and a point of pride for our entire community,” said Dennis Rouleau, Executive Director of Barkley Regional Airport. “Regional airports such as Barkley offer considerable value, providing convenient and accessible travel options for rural communities. They facilitate connections to the entire nation and the world, enabling economic growth and international access, while also making the region easily accessible to the global economy”.

Barkley announced the Fly Barkley Pledge in March 2026, a non-binding pledge that challenges travelers across the region to consider their hometown airport first and think Barkley when planning travel. The effort has reached over 200 total signers since launch.

“If you haven’t flown from Barkley yet, you’re missing what air travel should feel like: friendly, familiar service and a clean, comfortable terminal that makes the experience easy from start to finish,” said Rouleau. “Since launching the pledge, more than 200 community members have joined, helping build the momentum needed to grow air service as more travelers choose to fly local.”

Over the years, Barkley has invested in major infrastructure improvements, including the construction of its modern terminal in 2023, upgrades to security systems and equipment, and enhancements to the airfield.

As the airport celebrates this anniversary, airport leadership remains focused on the future: strengthening air service, increasing passenger usage, and reinforcing the importance of flying local to sustain and expand connectivity for the region.

Community members are encouraged to join in celebrating this milestone and to continue supporting their hometown airport by choosing to Fly Local, Fly Barkley.
