Barkley Regional Airport Addresses Federal Government Shutdown Impacts

WEST PADUCAH, KY (Sept. 30, 2025) — As the federal government shutdown seems imminent, Barkley Regional Airport (PAH) officials are preparing to support passengers and employees while closely monitoring impacts to the aviation system.

Barkley Regional Airport does not expect any immediate effects on daily operations; however, the majority of federal airport personnel are classified as “essential.” Employees, including TSA officers and FAA air traffic controllers who play a vital role in ensuring passenger safety and operational reliability, are required to report to work even in the event of a shutdown.

Airports nationwide, including Barkley, rely on federal agencies such as the Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), National Weather Service, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to ensure safe and efficient travel.

Airport Executive Director Dennis Rouleau expressed appreciation for their dedication under challenging circumstances.

“Although these professionals must keep working without pay, an extended shutdown could cause real difficulties for them and their families, even if they are eventually paid. If you travel, please thank the federal employees who make air travel possible,” Rouleau said.

While most airport functions will continue, some federal programs or support services may experience delays, and travelers could experience unexpected disruptions.

“We ask passengers to remain patient if delays occur as we all navigate this period of uncertainty,” Rouleau added. “As always, we are grateful for your support and for choosing Barkley Regional Airport. “

Airports also play a vital role in regional economies. Nationwide, airports generate more than $1.8 trillion in annual economic output, according to Airports Council International—North America (ACI-NA).
