OCT 8, 2025 UPDATE: Barkley Regional Airport (PAH) is updating the community following the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) latest guidance regarding federal funding for the Essential Air Service (EAS) and Alternate EAS programs.

On October 7, the Department announced that funding lapses tied to the ongoing federal government shutdown could suspend subsidy payments to airlines operating under EAS contracts as early as October 13.

However, today the DOT confirmed that it has secured additional budgetary resources, enabling uninterrupted air service through at least November 2, 2025.

While Barkley Regional Airport’s service was not interrupted thanks to Contour Airlines’ commitment to continue operations, the airport is grateful that the DOT has since secured additional funds to support the program.

The original press release, featuring statements from Contour Airlines CEO and Barkley Regional Airport’s Executive Director, is attached below.

Contour to Maintain Barkley Air Service Amid Federal EAS Funding Lapse

WEST PADUCAH, KY (October 7, 2025) — Barkley Regional Airport (PAH) is closely monitoring developments following the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) notice of funding lapse and impacts on the Essential Air Service (EAS) and alternate EAS programs, served on Monday, October 7.

The notice states that if the federal government shutdown continues beyond October 12, 2025, the DOT cannot provide subsidy payments to airlines operating under EAS contracts. Beginning October 13, 2025, carriers would be relieved of their obligations under EAS agreements until funding is restored.

Contour Airlines, which currently provides EAS flights for Barkley Regional Airport, has released the following statement:

“Contour Airlines recognizes the vital nature of the air service we have been entrusted to provide to rural America. Accordingly, Contour will continue to operate its full flight schedule during the federal government shutdown. Continued federal funding for EAS is necessary to sustain this service over the long term. We remain hopeful that leaders will reach a resolution soon to ensure that critical programs like EAS continue without interruption,” said Matt Chaifetz, CEO of Contour Airlines.

Barkley Regional Airport Executive Director Dennis Rouleau emphasized the importance of stable federal funding for the community’s connectivity and economic vitality.

“We sincerely acknowledge Matt Chaifetz’s dedication to the EAS program, Barkley Regional Airport, and the purchase region it serves during this challenging period. Ensuring continued access to the national air transportation system remains vital for our region, and we look forward to the prompt restoration of federal funding,” said Rouleau.

Barkley Regional Airport will keep the public informed as the situation develops. The airport remains committed to ensuring safe, reliable air service for the region and will work closely with Contour Airlines, the DOT, and community partners during this period of uncertainty.
